a trailblazing radio 1 show, unparalleled club-nights and a promising label, the 1-800 dinosaur crew are undoubtedly a focal point for all tastemakers alike. with a new 10inch ready for circulation, trim returns with james blake and airhead hinting towards a taster of whats to come. ‘rpg’ seeps with blakes signature off-kilter soul, feeding the subversive nature that trim revels in, whilst the airhead produced man like me, is undeniably anthemic. guided by the distinct-outsider vocal of one the most under-glorified, yet revered mcs in the uk scene, the 1-800 crew continue to construct their own direction.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

a surprising collaboration between mannella and the uk technos bearer - blawan- that clearly establish a deep techno-space, where the quirky sounds are free to be developed and created. right from the very first second of the dark breeze, which spreads a fluid, echoing and fickle synth, we can hear those fuzzy noises that mannella loves to use. a perfect combo is given by the presence of intense drums, thorough pads and harped synths: a total head-trip that flows in the whole ep. then, with i know you are a cheerful air gain the upper hand, leading it to be theperfect dance floor track. even if is just the second release, its pretty explicit the aim that the label has come to play in music today.

after coming with a pretty great electronic soft jazz number on the first release, distant works begins to define the mission behind the label with the second offering-a synth, italo-esque 5-cut ep that would only come from somewhere in the netherlands these days. the label bosses are clearly up to go to distant places to deliver the sounds. it s a very impressive statement and raises our interest on future releases.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

frankfurt s finest joins bokhari with a nod to 90 s ltj bukem coming at you with the kinda track that would ve taken the doors off your xr2 : remixes come from a pepe braddock-eque dorylus, and a steroid-induced banger from the one and only capracara. mastered by matt colton. artwork by spencer fenton, with each sleeve featuring a uniquely ordered combination of hand applied coloured stickers.

the new release from help presents works from various help-releated artists. another release from the arhus-imprint that doesn’t directly state club-proof, but still, this one wouldn t mind having a spin or two by your local dance pusher.the opening track is by central, a ripe house tune with both melodies and good-vibes - probably the closest this young man has come to making an anthem. next up is the four piece group maizena with an ambiguous rhythmical ambient-house jam from the area of denmark with the least rainfall. on the b-side you’ll find a raw and to the point recording of dj sports and c.k joining ph 1 in his throwback techno-studio in the suburbs of arhus. next up is the long awaited debut from manmade deejay, who has been cooking a floating rhythm jam for this 5 course meal of modern danish cuisine. last but not least amsterdam-based kaap joined central on a fine day at rubber studios to create this dreamy and galloping ride. all in all this genuine piece of wax is filled with local devotion and love from the help-crew. thanks for the support!

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.

the last of public releases single-digit records is the first from the british west midlands most famous dj and producer, mark e. this shouldnt come as a surprise. if anything, the fact it didnt happen earlier should, mark appeared as a remixer on jeffrey brodskys 2014 public release ep, which has earned him the status of esteemed member of the outfits inner circle and prime candidate for an extended play of his own.
